  • Medical schools want you to be aware of and have some of the skills and qualities of a doctor and the ability to study through a 5-year degree. You can develop some of these on our programme 🏆

  • You will not just have shadowed medical care being delivered but also reflect and talk about your experience. We teach these skills over the course 📚

All placements are taught and supervised in person by Dr Abdul Mannan. Dr Mannan leads the COVID-19 response in East Lancashire, and here is talking to ITV about remote consultations during the pandemic 📺

Summer Work Experience Timetable 2024

  • The surgery sees NHS patients from Monday to Friday, ensuring that a hands-on, clinical focus on medicine characterises your experience on these days.

    Induction

Start the week with a formal induction to the placement and the practice team at Hazel Valley Surgery, mirroring the comprehensive placement induction program extended to our first-year medical students. Meet your education supervisors, general practitioners and medical school tutors, Dr Abdul Mannan and Dr Imran Khan. Receive a personalised timetable designed to guide you through the remainder of your placement. Gain teaching into maintaining safety protocols during the placement and identify appropriate channels for seeking assistance.

Delve into an exploration of the NHS structure and the operational dynamics of general practice in England. In addition, you will be provided with details of a clinical project, the development of which is expected over the coming days. You will present your findings in a presentation at the grand rounds scheduled for Friday.

    Clinical Medicine

Learn how to take a clinical patient history through formal teaching provided by Dr Mannan, the undergraduate clinical tutor at the University of Manchester and UCLAN Medical Schools. Learn how to use medical diagnostic equipment to assess the patient, including blood pressure measurement, heart rate assessment, and temperature evaluation, and learn how to interpret this and manage your patient.

Explore the critical process of assessing a patient's condition to ascertain the potential severity of illness and the appropriateness of hospital admission. You will learn a substantial breadth of knowledge and skills and apply these competencies throughout the forthcoming clinical sessions.

  • Receive comprehensive instruction from a fully qualified trainer on the science of patient resuscitation, encompassing the proficient use of an automated external defibrillator. Engage in practical skill development through simulated patient scenarios and hands-on experience with simulated patients and medical life support equipment.

Acquire life support skills designed to enhance your competency in genuine emergencies. Upon completing this training, you will be conferred with an accredited qualification in life support, which you can use in real-life emergency scenarios and look great on your medical school application.

  • On this clinical day, you will observe and shadow the primary care team members within the practice. During this observational period, you will witness the provision of healthcare services to NHS patients, gaining insight into the clinical processes involved in eliciting patient histories, conducting thorough examinations, and coordinating follow-up procedures.

Moreover, you will actively participate in examining and managing patients, with opportunities to assess patients and undertake basic investigative procedures. The clinician supervising you will be given protected time to teach you. As with our medical students, we will obtain patient consent for education, instruction, and training with you.

  • Today's teaching encompasses the acquisition and refinement of clinical skills. You will undergo instruction in surgical suturing, followed by practical application on simulated wounds. Further, the session will include comprehensive training on extracting blood samples from patients and proficiency in conducting various diagnostic tests, such as patients' ECG, peak flows, and other relevant examinations.

Simultaneously, you will observe and study clinical cases by shadowing experienced clinicians in the surgery. The focus will predominantly be on chronic disease management, specifically on conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Additionally, you may have opportunities to observe and shadow clinics dedicated to vaccination and baby check procedures.

  • The day will start with tutorials and teaching with Dr Mannan. This will focus on the medical school admission process and tips on how to make a successful application. Students will also participate in grand rounds where they will present their clinical projects and gain feedback.

The week-long programme will close at 12.00 pm with personal study time in the afternoon.

  • The GP surgery is closed, so your training will focus on developing the other critical qualities of a doctor and securing a place at medical school.

Participate in Medical School Interview Training, where you will acquire the skill set to effectively structure responses, enhance confidence, and refine the art of concise and precise reasoning. Delve into medical topics of clinical importance, including consent, capacity, and ethics, and their application to diverse scenarios. Engage in practical exercises involving interview stations, receiving expert feedback to refine your performance further.

Additionally, partake in Teamwork and Leadership Teaching, immersing yourself in clinical scenarios and medical dilemmas that serve as platforms for developing and demonstrating leadership and teamwork skills. This structured approach aims to augment your confidence in collaborative work and foster productive contributions within a clinical team setting.

Conclude the training program with a formal dinner, providing a congenial setting for networking at a local English restaurant. This occasion offers an invaluable opportunity to interface with doctors and other students in a more informal setting,
