Why should you attend our medicine clinical work experience placements?

All placements are taught and supervised in person by Dr. Abdul Mannan. Dr. Mannan leads the COVID19 response in East Lancashire and here is talking to ITV about remote consultations during the pandemic ๐Ÿ“บ

  • Medical schools require applicants to have an insight into working as a doctor in the NHS, even during the COVID19 pandemic ๐Ÿ”Ž

  • They want you to be aware of (and have some) of the skills and qualities required to be a doctor and study 5 years through a tough medical programme ๐Ÿ“š

  • It is not satisfactory to just observe healthcare being delivered, but to also reflect and talk about your own experience ๐Ÿชฉ

  • Dr. Mannan and Dr. Khan supervise and provide pastoral care to all students in person during the placement ๐Ÿ† We do not compromise on the quality of your training.

  • The patients you will see will be from our own NHS practice (with consent) and will be chosen to offer you challenging cases just like you will see at medical school ๐Ÿ”Ž

  • We bring all our surgery equipment and the patients to you in a COVID19 safe environment ๐Ÿ˜ท We bring our own NHS GP Surgery and patients to you.

  • We will provide students a certificate of attendance following successful completion of the placement ๐Ÿ…

What do you teach on the medicine work experience placement?

  • You will learn patient clinical history taking, communication and diagnostic skills. Teaching mirrors Years 1 and 2 at medical school ๐Ÿ—ฃ

  • You will see patients with diseases that cover respiratory medicine, cardiology, oncology (cancer care) and paediatrics ๐Ÿซ€

  • We will then ask you to be the doctor and start the consultation with the patient. You will come to a management plan in partnership with your patients ๐Ÿ“‹ Not every patient will want to go to hospital โš ๏ธ You might also have to take a history from a mother or relative.

  • You will decide what diagnostic tests you want to do (these could include blood pressure readings, oxygen saturation and arranging an ECG) and interpret them ๐Ÿงช

  • We will teach you any cardiology, anatomy, pharmacology, or any other clinical knowledge you may need to help treat your patient ๐Ÿ“š

  • We will also teach you medical ethics and good medical practice guidance from the General Medical Council.

  • You will need to provide holistic care to your patients. Donโ€™t forget the caring side of medicine!

  • Once you have seen your patient, you will need to write an accurate clinical entry in the medical records ๐Ÿ’พ

  • The clinical experience is hands on on both days. We expect all students to engage with the tutor and other students as part of a simulated medical team โš ๏ธ There are no boring lectures.

What practical skills and experience will I gain from the medicine work experience?

  • We pack your placement with medical and surgical practical skills that you can use in your medical school application as well as in real life โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿฉผ

  • We provide full training on Basic Life Support (BLS) on our weekend placements in Manchester โšก๏ธ We bring all our manikins and resuscitation training equipment. Learn how to resuscitate an unresponsive adult and how to respond in emergency scenarios.
